  1. Dear Charu madam,

I read your article on 'sankarabaranam' today in THE HINDU.

As you say, certain phrases alone in the whole song gives edition to raga in cini songs and other areas of song go off from commiting anything to main raga whereas our carnatic never goes deviated from swaras of a particular raga. You are very clever in trferring ragas to cini tunes in particular phrases alone. That is not enough to fix up the song to a raga and that resemblance will easily be read by you musicians. If not composed the songs in pure ragas ( mannavan vanthanadi, madavi pon mayilal, vasantha mullai pole vanthu, ennai arivai ella uriyum enathenrarivai - kalyani, kkpriya, sarukesi, sahana) it stands a challenge to average rasikas like me to identify ragas in cini songs. Yerikkarai pongarre, aalai pol velai pol, kalyana naal parkka and so on say good of sankarabaranam visible in areas as you prescribe.

I too am strong cini songs are something like assorted sweets but not of individual taste. Will you be good enough to me in agreeing if not I am wrong ?

I will attend your Bhavan's slot on 2.12.2013. Thank you,

    regards,

    K.PADMANABAN
