A Raga's Journey — Aspects of Abheri

My fortnightly column on Ragas in Classical and Film music started today with Abheri raga.

Postscript: In addition to many appreciative messages, this column has evoked some responses that have bemused me. Some Scholars of music have written demanding Exhaustive and Correct treatment in accordance with Ancient Treatises (never mind the fact that the definition of Correct varies amongst each one). If they have their way, this column too would sink into the morass of Mumbo-jumbo, Arcane Terminology, Pedantry, and Polemics.
If you read the column, please do send your feedback to: letters@thehindu.co.in

  1. Well, I can recognize the AR Rehman's & Harris Jeyaraj's songs and of course, 'Tu cheez badi hai'. But I am not very sure about the other songs. But basically, these songs are very different so I wonder if all of them have a single raaga?

  2. Dear Charulatha,

I did enjoy your Isai Payanam day before yesterday (Sunday) I had to come back in a hurry so I could not meet you after the concert to express my thanks and congratulations. Your violinist was very good, particularly in the Hindolum. Please convey my appreciation to him.

When are you going to do Suruti, Kedaragowlavam, Shudda saveri? Please keep me informed.

    Best wishes,

    Ram
