Dear Ms.Charulatha Mani,
I have been reading with interest your e-mail letters and also listening to the music
clippings of your singing.I am an ardent lover of not only Carnatic Music, but also Hindustani
Music.I have heard the concerts of maestros/doyens/legends in Carnatic Music at Madras
in my school/college days and later at Delhi.I have also heard the maestros in Hindustani
Music in Delhi during 70's,80's &90's.I had learnt Hindustani Music for about three years
from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. As such I have a fairly good knowledge of
Hindustani Music also.
Well, the purpose of writing this letter is to get some clarifications about the ragas
of some old film songs.Since you have been making some research &studies in music
including old Tamil & Hindi film songs, you should be able to clarify.
1. The classical based song in the Tamil film,"Karnan",namely,"Iravum Nilavum
Malarattume,Nam Inimai ninaivugal thodarattume",probably sung by Susheela is based
on the Hindustani raga,'Shyam Kalyan'.Pl.confirm.
2.The song,"Partha jnapakam illaiyo Paruva natakam thollaiyo" is based on which
raga?
3.On which raga is the song,"Kaththiruppan Kamala Kannan" is based on?This song
is also perhaps a film song of the 50's/60's and was very popular.
4.In one of your e-mail letters you had indicated the ragas of some Hindi film songs
as 'Bilawal' & 'Alaiya Bilawal'.I had sent some clarifications/confirmations letter, which,it
appears, has not been delivered. As far as I know, 'Bilawal' is the Hindustani equivalent of
our 'Shankarabharanam' and 'Alaiya Bilawal' is the equivalent of ' Bilahari'.I hope I am
right.Pl.confirm.
I have heard only once your full-fledged concert, perhaps at Narada Gana Sabha
Mini Hall.I look forward to hearing your concert - a comparative analysis of Hindustani &
Carnatic Music including the famous Hindi & Tamil film songs of yester-years.Pl.
notify me,when you give a concert.
With regards
Santhanam
