Tamizh Isai Festival concert, Vani Mahal

On March 28th, it was an evening to Tamizh compositions from Tevaram, to Divyaprabandam, Muthuthandavar, Arunachala Kavi, Gopalakrishna Bharati to Bharatiar and Bharatidasan, and finally Arunagirinathar. The highlights of the evening were Sabapathikku (Abhogi), Aadikondar (Mayamalavagowla), Enneramum (Poorvikalyani, Syama Sastri), Eppadi Manam (Huseni), among others. The Vani Mahal auditorium was full, and rasikas were receptive. I presented each piece preceded by a short introduction to the meaning and musical speciality of the item.

  2. Dear Ms.Charulatha Mani,
Yesterday your thematic concert was very good. The explanation you gave for the origin of Carnatic Music as from 'Thevaram'(actually it started from the 'Pann' or 'Pannisai','Chandam','Viruththam'), and for the kritis & about the composers/vaggeyakaras was very educative. That Shyama Shastri has composed
some Tamil songs was news to me.
"Varana mukhava Thunai varuvai" in 'Hamsadhwani'has also been sung beautifully by TM Krishna in an audio-cassette recording;he has also sung "Manasaramadhi ani Sivanai Dinamum Ninai"in 'Saramathi'of Thanjavoor SankaraIyer as
well as "Muruga Muruga Endral Uragado Undan Ullam"in 'Saveri'of Periyasami Thooran in the same cassette.
'Abhogi' alap was excellent. This is a good ghana raga in Hindustani also.
The kriti "Sabhapathikku Veru Deivam "of Gopalakrishna Bharati was well rendered.
But in the 'anupallavi',"Kripanidhi Ivaraippole",after that the words, as far as I have heard, are 'kidaikkumo indha bhoomitanil'and not 'dharanitanil'.Of course 'bhoomi' & 'dharani'are one and the same. Swaraprasthara was very good. But the fast piece, "Adikkondar" in 'Mayamalavagowla'was presented well. The composer is Marimutha Pillai or Muthu Thandavar? Eppadi Manam Tunindaro Swami"in 'Usaini' was very melodious.'Alap' was elaborate and good and neraval at'Anbudan unnai nan' was also good. 'Bhairavi'alap was very good. Then I left. But I have my own doubts about the song is as if being sung by Seetha refering to Rama. What I heard was that contrary to common thinking of "Seetha singing refering to Rama",it's actually "Rama singing refering to Seetha after looking up at her standing in the balcony (upparigai)of 'kannimadam'.The lines,"kannimadamthanil"(not "kannimadam munne").
On the whole the concert was satisfying. The audience enjoyed well."Bravo"
"Bon courage" as they say in French,i.e.,"Well done,Keep it up".

  4. Madam

I am always a great admirer of Tamil Isai. In those days ie. in the fifties and sixties I used to trek my way to Rajah Annaamalai maram for Tamizh Isai concerts as in the very few other Sabahs Tammizh isai was a rare commodity or they would say" snake in iceland" You
may like to know Karakuruchi Arunachalam's concert would begin at 11PM and would to upto 3 AM next morning. Even AIR used to relay it live

I wish I were there at your concert at Vani mahal. The late Suddhananda Bharathi was a great friend of my late father and when he visited our native place Tirumayam he used to call on my father. I rendered his Thookiya Thiruvadi and Eppadi paadinaro in his presence as boy and continued to render prayer song in school.
When I cross over to Chennai in May I would try to get the CD of the concert from the musical store

With best wishes to all of you
